Alert Bay RCMP be on alert for another FRAUD

The Alert Bay RCMP would like to advise of recent and continued attempts to defraud residents of Cormorant Island.  The Alert Bay RCMP have received reports of individuals, usually located in other countries, contacting residents of Cormorant Island via letter and telephone in attempts to coerce them into sending money.  These scams will often promise large sums of money or expensive items in return for a comparatively small amount of upfront money.  This request for money upfront is usually characterized as "processing fees" or "taxes on winnings".  The complexities of international policing combined with the high frequency of these events make it near impossible for police to achieve a resolution in the form of a criminal charge or retrieval of funds lost.  As such, the Alert Bay RCMP are asking that residents be vigilant and cautious before giving out personal information or sending money to anyone.

Members of the public are encouraged to verify the identity of anyone that contacts them for a monetary purpose prior to sending money.  Additionally, if there is concern or suspicion the public can contact the Alert Bay RCMP.

Increase access to Non-Emergency Medical Care Port Hardy

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 10, 2016

Saturday clinic hours will help Port Hardy patients
get the right medical care in the right setting

The community of Port Hardy will soon have increased access to non-emergency medical care.

Starting on February 13 the Port Hardy Primary Health Care Centre will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. People in need of prescriptions, test results and treatment of non-emergency medical issues will be able to get same-day appointments with a family physician or nurse practitioner. It is anticipated that this pilot project will be of real benefit to people who have difficulty seeing their doctor on weekdays and may otherwise seek care at a local emergency department. The project will be assessed in the future to determine if it is well-used and warrants continuation.

“We’re very happy to continue improving access to primary medical care for families in our community,” said Dr. Prean Armogan, Medical Director for the Mount Waddington/Strathcona region.

“The people who work during the day are the same people you will see after hours in Emergency,” he added. “It is easy for people to think that it doesn’t matter if they occasionally come in after-hours for non-emergency situations, but you want staff to be as fresh and rested as possible.”

Between August, 2015 and January, 2016 the staff of Port Hardy Hospital redirected 233 patients from the Emergency Department to community clinics for treatment of non-urgent conditions. The expanded hours of the Port Hardy Primary Health Care Centre will make it easier for patients to get the care they need in the appropriate setting. Patients can call 250-902-6008 to request an appointment with the next available doctor or nurse practitioner at the Health Centre. The Saturday opening hours will begin on February 13.

Anyone experiencing chest pain, difficulty breathing or severe bleeding, or anyone who feels they need urgent medical attention, should not hesitate to call 911 or go to the nearest Emergency Department.

FRAUD ALERT!

We have seen MANY cheque fraud attempts in the past week (January 2016) at the Alert Bay Vancity Branch.

Individuals are receiving cheques in the mail along with a letter.  These are not your average fraudulent cheques: They look really legitimate.  They have the individual’s full name, they have a watermark on the back, the eagle that you see is embossed in high quality Gold ink.

Please pass this on and warn anyone who may be at risk to these scams especially elders/seniors.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
